Why I Write About Serial Killers—Deviant and Aberrant Behavior?
Someone once asked me, “Ben, why serial killers? Why don’t you write about regular stuff like anyone else? What’s up with your fixation on deviant and aberrant behaviour ? Why Serial killer fiction?”
My answer to these questions is not as complicated as some may think. But, I think I must explain myself with a little more detail than, a clear cut answer. Because a simple answer might come off as deviant as Edmund Kemper, the Co-ed killer’s rationalization of his murders:

Alive, they were distant, not sharing with me. I was trying to establish a relationship. When they were being killed, there wasn’t anything going on in my mind except that they were going to be mine . . .That was the only way they could be mine. I had their spirits. I still have them.(Innes, 2007) Maybe the above statement was not as simple given it came from someone who once said, at the age of 10 when asked why he did not kiss a crush: If I kiss her, I would have to kill her. |

My answer to why I write about serial killers, deviant and aberrant behavior is that I cannot write gratuitous fiction. As some people cannot stand gratuitous violence, I find that writing fiction for the sake of fiction is not rewarding—to me,
or to the reader. Of course, I believe there are lessons embedded in all genres, and there are messages in most works of fiction. But I find that writing about the true evil that lurks within our midst holds a more poignant message of awareness—Wouldn’t you say so? I love researching and exposing the workings of true life deviants so that the reader, somewhere, somehow walks away from my book a little more aware of the turbulent universe we live in.
